Alexander Ovechkin: “I'm not a fool - to walk before such a tournament”

On Wednesday morning, Washington Capitals striker and Russian national team Alexander Ovechkin arrived in Moscow. In an interview with Sport Today, he promised that he would begin preparations for the World Cup on April 16, as required by the coaching staff.

“I see you brought a lot of clubs with you.” How much is there?

- Enough.

“Enough for what?”

- (Laughs.) To break the sides.

- What are your plans for the coming days?

- I do not even know. I flew home. I have not seen relatives, friends, relatives for a long time. And it will be necessary to prepare for the World Cup. Yes, a friend has a wedding.

“Will he marry at this time?”

- Yes, I did.

- Vyacheslav Bykov is waiting for you at a training session on April 16. Will you be on this day?

- I want to call in Novogorsk tomorrow. Fly away? So I’ll come when they arrive.

- But will you start training on April 16 or ask for a rest?

- No, no, as they said, I’ll work. Yes, after the wedding of a friend I’ll start to ride.

- To slag came out?

- I’m not going to break the regime, I have to maintain my uniform. I'm not a fool - to walk before such a tournament.

- More recently, you had a broad beard.

- Shaved off.

- Tired of it?

- I thought, since I’m coming to Moscow, it should be beautiful.

- Before the World Cup, you always have some kind of chip. For example, yellow shoelaces.

- It will be this time, wait for the start of training. I drove managers to the club so that everything was fine.

- What impression did you get from the season? You didn’t get into the playoffs.

- Okay, okay. Got experience. They said that my second year will be unsuccessful. But everything turned out pretty well. I stayed in the top ten in goals. Yes, the team here has completed the season ahead of schedule. But there were objective reasons for this. Washington was hit by an epidemic of injuries. Exchanges ... Much of this failed.

- Yes, and there were scandals.

- There were no scandals. This is all the journalists came up with.

- But you did make rather tough statements, for example, regarding the exchange of Zubrus.

- Yes, I immediately said that if we exchange someone, we should take someone. But this is not a scandal. Why don't we take players? Yes, we play for the future, but even now the result is required.

- Is it not because of these statements that your own game has worsened?

“I would not say that.” Everything was fine. I just want to play in a strong team, but it doesn’t work out.

- Many NHL players refuse to play for the national team, seeing that they are not going to a very strong roster.

- I do not refuse. Others may have their own reasons.
