Big brothers

March 3 in Rostock, Germany, Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin will hold his 11th rating fight in the professional ring against 34-year-old American David Bostis. That same evening, the younger brother of the Olympic champion of Athens, Vladimir, will make his debut in professionals.

For Alexander Povetkin, who does not hide his desire to hold the first fight for the champion title this year, the main goal at this stage of his career is to increase the rating, the figure of which will determine the time when the Russian boxer can challenge the champions.

At the moment, Povetkin takes the 21st place according to the WBC, and in order to rise higher as quickly as possible, Alexander needs to defeat his rivals from the top twenty. The names of his possible opponents looked logical - Monte Barrett, Danny Williams, Peter Ohello. But in the end, it was not possible to agree with any of them. According to an unofficial version, they were not satisfied with the fee proposed by the headquarters of the Russian. The official version was announced by Hagen Dering, the matchmaker of the German promoter company Sauerland Events, representing Povetkin’s interests: “Alexander is now very difficult to find a worthy opponent. Monte Barrett and Danny Williams refused to enter the ring. I think they were just scared. Representatives of Bostis themselves proposed a fight, sending to the same video of his performances. After reviewing them, we agreed, deciding to use this match to tighten Alexander’s performance schedule. Experience is very important for him now. ”

David Bostis, for nearly 11 years of playing in the professional ring, held 49 fights, scoring 37 wins (15 by knockout). Among his rivals, Vladimir Klitschko, Calvin Brock, Tim Witherspoon and Francis Botha stand out, but could not defeat Bostis. As a rule, meetings with little-known opponents turned out to be successful for the American. So in the last fight, held on February 9, David defeated his compatriot Earl Ladson on points, in whose track record there were more defeats before this battle than victories. And although Bostis is heavier than Povetkin by almost 20 kilograms and a few centimeters higher, there is no doubt that tomorrow’s battle will bring Alexander the 11th victory. And the rating will wait.

Completely different tasks are faced by 26-year-old light heavyweight Vladimir Povetkin. Alexander's younger brother, who has also recently signed a contract with Sauerland Events, is not yet very famous for boxing fans. Among his achievements at the amateur level, only the silver of the Youth Olympics can be noted, although the boxer's potential is not lower than that of his older brother. The reasons that did not allow Vladimir to declare himself loudly earlier, experts consider health problems. Recently, Povetkin Jr. was an assistant coach in the team of his older brother, but having recently undergone a physical examination in one of the German clinics, he nevertheless received the approval of doctors to resume his sports career. The opponent of Vladimir will be the German Ian Henry Retz, who has spent one battle in the professional ring and won on points.
