Pavel Pogrebnyak: “I dedicate the goal to mom”

The author of the winning goal against the Estonian national team, Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, talks about nervousness, understanding with Sychev and Spartak’s walls in an interview with SPORT Today.

- Congratulations on your victory. Finally!

- With all due respect to the Estonian national team, we had to beat this opponent.

- However, for a long time they could not score.

- It seems to me that the goal was a matter of time. And it's good that in the end it all ended so.

“Didn't they even get nervous?” Still, until the 78th minute, they could not hit the gates of Mart Poom.

- There was, to be honest, nervousness. He even began to think that we would draw again.

- How difficult was it to enter such a game?

- I will say for myself - I had a very difficult time. In the first minutes I couldn’t even hit the ball, I was so nervous.

- But then calmed down?

- Only after the goal. The scoring combination turned out for a feast for the eyes. Still, I didn’t forget Spartak football, all these “walls”, runs. And thanks to Yegor Titov for giving such a pass. I confess that I expected something similar from him.

- You hit in touch. Although it was probably time to handle the ball.

- No, I immediately realized that you need to hit with one touch.

- Are Estonians a serious contender?

- If you watched the first half, you probably saw a dangerous moment at our goal. I don’t even know how it would end if the guests scored. So the Estonian team played very well.

- How do you like St. Petersburg fans?

- The situation at Petrovsky was fantastic. However, in St. Petersburg there is no other way.

- Did you quickly find a common language with Dmitry Sychev?

- Yeah. By the way, I even thought about it on the field - where did such a mutual understanding come from?

- Did you like the scheme that Guus Hiddink chose for the match?

- The normal scheme, we won.

- And the Dutch specialist was not nervous during the break?

- And I did not go to the locker room, warming up on the field.

“But at least they gave you some advice?”

- No, no one gave me the installation.

- But before the match, Guus told you that this is for the national team, perhaps the last chance to remain among the applicants for two tickets to Euro 2008?

- He said, of course. Like any coach, he urged us to approach the match as seriously as possible and achieve victory.

- To whom do you dedicate this goal?

- His mother. She had a birthday on October 7th.
