European Aquatics Championship ends in Budapest

The Russian team won 16 gold medals in Hungary, including seven won by swimmers in the Tamas Seci basin. These are absolutely the best results, although you probably should not be seduced by this achievement.

Firstly, the result could be higher. In synchronized diving from a three-meter springboard, Dmitry Sautin and Yuri Kunakov lost the “gold” to the German duo only in their last attempt. Stanislav Komarov never reached the medals. The women's swimming team generally performed unsuccessfully.

Secondly, winning the continental championship for most participants is not an end in itself, but the stage of preparation for the pre-Olympic world championship, which will take place in Melbourne at the end of March. In parallel with the Budapest starts, the US Swimming Championship was held, and the Europeans did not even dream of the results shown there in some types of programs. Nevertheless, the Old World has something to boast of: Germans and French women beat world records, and Lor Manad, who is going to start at the Beijing Olympics as many as eight distances (including relay races), held a rehearsal and won four top awards.

On the other hand, Russians also have something to be proud of. Arkady Vyatchanin, now a three-time European champion, can safely be called the new leader of the team. Two gold medals by Yuri Prilukov are worth a lot, and Dmitry Sautin’s victory in jumping from a three-meter springboard from the category of sporting feats in general. At 32 (!) Years, he seriously complicated the program by including helical jumps with forward rotation, thanks to which he won the 10th title of champion of the continent. Melbourne will show whether Dmitry will help the development of a new element to compete with Chinese jumpers.
