Rating of IT employers in Nizhny Novgorod: a study of the preferences of students of technical specialties

HR selects the most attractive IT companies on the #NNITHR mitap

At the end of March in Nizhny Novgorod, the first formal event for IT HR was held, at which there was a lot of interesting things and, among other things, presented the results of a study on the preferences of technical students when choosing employers, and in particular, the attractiveness of IT companies among students. The work was carried out by students of the Faculty of Management of the Nizhny Novgorod Higher School of Economics, the future HR. At the IT HR mitap, they themselves presented the results of the study. I will retell the most interesting presentation they presented.

It will be right to start with a sample, especially since there were some nuances here. In total, almost 200 people answered questions in the questionnaire, of which 184 answers were considered relevant. Interestingly, I wouldn’t call it a significant division by gender - 79 girls and 105 boys were processed. And where then all beautiful programmers go? In higher education institutions, respondents need to note a greater number of participants from the home for the authors of the HSE. Also interesting statistics is the indicated employment of respondents, from which it is clear that almost half of them already have work experience. Here is how brief the sample looks on the graphs.

And now immediately to the most interesting! Here is the cloud of the most recognizable IT companies in Nizhny Novgorod.

Respondents were offered a list of the largest IT companies in the city with the addition of several iconic companies. As you can see, Intel ranks first. It is followed by MERA, the largest local development company, followed by one of the most attractive Russian employers Yandex, then a group of close ones based on the results of NetCracker, Tinkoff, Sberbank-Technologies and HARMAN. It is noteworthy that the recently opened its development center Tinkoff occupies such a high place. Perhaps this is partly due to the overall fame of the brand. Most likely, Sberbank-Technologies helped the general fame. But the result of NetCracker, which has been in Nizhny Novgorod for several years, says that it has established itself well in the local market and is actively working with universities. Another newcomer to EPAM, who opened his representative office just by conducting an aggressive hiring campaign, ranked 13th. This company has a good chance to improve the result next year.

The authors of the study divided the question of the attractiveness of companies: 1) first they asked to name the best IT companies in the Nizhny Novgorod region, 2) then they asked which IT companies in the Nizhny Novgorod region students would like to work. Comparing the answers should help to understand the degree of familiarity of students with companies and the attractiveness of their field of work. It is also necessary to clarify that the respondents had to write any number of company names themselves to the first question, and in the second they were asked to indicate only three. In the charts mentioned only the companies included in the top ten by result.

The table below shows the difference between the companies that are considered the best and the companies where they would like to work in the context of universities. As you can see, the assessment of the brand of companies does not always coincide with the representation of the students where they will work.

Let's look at another research question. The authors found out what attracts students, and what, on the contrary, they consider unimportant when choosing an employer. A list was proposed in the questionnaire from which it was necessary to select only four significant items.

It seems to be natural, but at the same time a bit strange for students, the first point about attractive salary won. Students occupy the second place with professional development and training, at the third - working conditions, at the fourth - career growth, at the fifth - work schedule, at the sixth - work specifics. In my opinion, still an unexpected distribution.

A separate question in the questionnaire concerned the expected minimum wage and was asked to those who chose this item among the most significant. For respondents without work experience, the average value was 38,756 rubles , for respondents with experience - 50,375 rubles . The distribution of expectations almost did not depend on the course, the most common value was 30,000 rubles.

The study can find more information about the attractiveness of certain working conditions. For example, the fact that in the social package, students consider medical insurance as the most important and, to a lesser extent, compensation for meals and discounts on sports. Respondents noted the importance of a comfortable place of work and a modern office as a whole, but not the location of the office itself. I'm sure the local company will be interested in any details.

It is great to see how the IT-city is developing, new companies are coming, competition is growing, specialists are uniting in communities, more and more professional events are being held. It's great to see newbies, recent students, and it's very interesting how companies will change to become or stay attractive to them. I hope that next year I will be able to get information for comparison!
