A similar survey among users of "Habrahabra" was published at the end of this article. The survey was conducted as part of the research “Young IT-cadres of Russia: motivation and attitude to work”. In total, 502 young specialists from different regions of Russia were surveyed. Most of them are involved in software development, support, and testing.
The distinctive ability of young Russian IT specialists is a high degree of potential integration into the international professional community. Roughly speaking, these specialists are a fellow programmer from another country - some Austria or the United States - maybe closer in ideology than a neighbor in a residential area in their own home. This is manifested in the following:
- The vast majority of respondents (65%) express a desire to work abroad. Probably some do not mind even forever remain abroad. Today, about half of the Russian-speaking “Habrahabra” audience comes from abroad and it seems that this proportion is growing (although this tendency may be partially due to the growing popularity of VPN among Russian users).
- More than half of young Russian IT specialists are fluent in English. Only 2% do not speak English at all.
Most popular countries to move:
Note that recently, Habrahabr published a
subjective comparison of the median wages of IT specialists in 22 countries around the world (by the specialty of Senior Software Engineer) after deducting income tax and
after applying the cost-of-living index . In the ranking, dollar amounts can be higher than the real wage, because they are multiplied by the cost-of-living index, which is less than one, where the Palo Alto level is taken as the unit: the author of the study, Victoria Borodina (
progblog ), uses this methodology. The methodology seems more visual for the subjective feeling of “wealth” of an IT specialist compared to the surrounding population (in fact, the rating shows how many standard social service packages a specialist can afford - that is, it’s like a salary rating in the subjective dollar sense). Applied COLI includes accommodation, food, travel, but does not take into account travel expenses, car purchases and pleasure.

In a comment for RBC, the managing partner of the Kontakt headhunting company (InterSearch Group Russia), Marina Tarnopolskaya, agreed that overseas IT employees in ordinary positions receive a much higher salary than at home. The average salary of an IT specialist of the initial level in developed countries is € 2,500–3,000 before taxes, and the majority (39%) of Kelly Services survey participants receive 50–100 thousand rubles in Russia.
