What VMware does and what the future network architecture will be

As noted in Gartner, 10% of corporate data is generated outside the traditional data center. And this figure is expected to rise to 50% by 2022. The trend is associated with the growing popularity of "peripheral computing" ( edge computing ) and the Internet of things.

Companies have to look for new approaches to the organization of corporate networks. One such company is VMware virtualization software developer. In early May, representatives of the organization outlined their vision of the networks of the future and presented the concept of the Virtual Cloud Network. Her idea is to simplify the management of software networks and increase the security of distributed services.

In more detail that does VMware, we will tell further.

To implement the concept of the Virtual Cloud Network, VMware has updated its portfolio of solutions of the VMware NSX platform, implementing software-defined networks. Innovations will increase the security of connections and applications in SD-data center and provider networks.

What updated

Network Virtualization. A new functionality will be added to the NSX Data Center platform for virtualization of corporate data center networks to work in the bare-metal environment and launch container applications. This will allow applications to be networked regardless of their scanning method. In addition, integration with containers should increase their security. VMware also optimizes network performance when handling distributed loads.

The English hospital Baystate Health has about 1,500 virtual servers "in service". When the hospital's IT department made the transition to the hyper-converged infrastructure, they used the features of the NSX. As noted by CTO Baystate Health, this has allowed for a high level of integration of all software and hardware, as well as drivers.

Solutions for multi-cloud networks. NSX Cloud resolves the conflicts and difficulties that arise when using multi-cloud. For example, eliminate inconsistencies in cloud configurations and the need to manually configure individual regional policies or Virtual Private Cloud policies. In addition, VMware added original management tools for those who organize multi-cloud with Azure.

For example, Armor, a security-as-a-service solution company , has implemented a segmented database schema with three levels (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3). Previously, a virtual private firewall was responsible for it, but it was poorly integrated because it was impossible to write an API for it. Because of this, customers could not freely move their VMs. The NSX system provided new API development tools that helped solve the problem.

Now the company uses NSX to store 1200 client firewall settings, which in total operate tens of thousands of virtual machines. NSX made it possible to organize a second level of segmentation in SDN and increase the overall security of the system.

Updates in SD-WAN . VMware NSX SD-WAN automates the management of user devices and makes business processes more transparent. For example, by integrating SD-WAN with Data Center and Cloud solutions, you can extend the same security policies to different cloud environments, providing operational control over them and access levels.

For example, as they say at IlliniCloud, which provides cloud services to government agencies, schools and colleges, the NSX system helps balance the load on the network and acts as a firewall in three data centers, providing secure communication between them. As noted by Jason Radford, developer of the company's cloud architecture, the transition to NSX helped reduce the amount of hardware used and save on its maintenance and regular updates.

Tools for working with hybrid clouds. NSX Hybrid Connect makes it easy to configure networks in a hybrid environment. The solution will help to smoothly transfer workloads from any VMware environment to an SD data center, deployed on-premise or in a public cloud environment.

Representatives of Alliant Credit Union noted that the introduction of NSX increased the security of the infrastructure through microsegmentation and accelerated the loading of data into the repository. At the same time, they were able to automatically transfer files from SQL to partner file servers.

Why are VMware doing VCN

The company believes that VCN is exactly what the market will need in the next 20 years. In their opinion, the concept of “corporate data center” has begun to include all the equipment located in branches and offices of companies, multi-cloud solutions, as well as connected devices.

Brad Casemore, IDC Vice President, supports VMware policy. He notes that the number of enterprises that master the multi-cloud model of work is growing every year. Therefore, solutions from companies like VMware, which simplify the use of hyper-distributed infrastructure, will only gain popularity among customers from different industries.
