Musketeers are not the same, or they have been waiting for Athos, but Porthos has arrived

The company Atos , whose business is also connected with the production of Enterpise servers under the Bull brand, is still little known on the Russian market. However, she is actively trying to win a place under our sun. We were one of the first in Russia to see and even touch the BullSequana S800 server. We share with you the photos from the unpacking of this impressive device.

The server came in a large box, which occupies a whole pallet. Anyone who is familiar with the work of Dumas, and even more so with domestic films about musketeers, will not have any other associations with the name Atos - the image of a brave musketeer immediately appears before his eyes:

But the dimensions, and most importantly the weight of the BullSequana S800, turned out to be a very different hero - Porthos.

The manufacturer cynically indicated a weight of 47.8 kg on the box, although in reality this server weighs about 120 kg!

To pull out this hippo from a box it was necessary four together, not counting the photographer. In the world of "full virtualization" there are no problems with such heavy equipment.

The BullSequana S800 has an interesting design: in fact, it is a stack of four small S200 servers in a single package. Moreover, if several BullSequana S800s are scaled, then the S1600 or S3200 servers will be obtained, respectively. Scale server using switching devices, UBox, hard-to-install. These are full-fledged devices with a microcontroller, chips, control logic. And one of the advantages of Atos is independence from foreign developments: the company itself has developed the architecture and switches. You can scale servers using processors of the same family, for example, Intel Xeon Scalable Processors. And in the maximum configuration, the server occupies the whole rack, 42 units.

The S200 modules themselves are inserted into the case in the form of 2-unit blades - they are called compute modules. Inside one S800, the individual S200s are connected into a single machine using a connecting box, the design of which is hidden in the bowels of the hull.

The composition of a single BullSequana S unit can be different: it includes general-purpose computing servers, disk storages, and GPU-based servers. Depending on the processor series, each unit runs up to 768 GB per processor, or up to 1.5 TB.

The back of the computing module with switching connectors:

You can decide on the configuration of each individual block later.

Behind the server are inserted all kinds of expansion cards, a set of which you can choose at will. The replacement is hot (if supported by the OS).

The abundance of cables inside the case:

Sly latch "French type" - just like that neither open nor close:

And each time the touching detail is a DVD with the documentation included:

This is where our Atos' unpacking report from the Atos BullSequana S800 is completed. At first glance, a good server, a thousand devils!
