Nanoleaf Aurora - smart lighting system for home or office

Lighting has long ceased to be just a tool for dispelling darkness. Properly installed light sources, allow you to create the desired owner of the room atmosphere. This can be relax or, conversely, light, which allows you to mobilize your own strength.

With the development of technology, lighting systems are gradually getting wiser. With one of these systems, we met at CES 2017, it was the Nanoleaf Aurora, which made a huge impression on us.

It all started with a project on Kickstarter in 2013. Then the company first introduced geometric LED energy-saving light bulbs that have interested many. In any case, on the same Kickstarter more than 5 thousand people invested in the project.

With the Nanoleaf Aurora project, the company did not reach crowdfunding sites, but began to conquer consumer electronics exhibitions, such as CES in Las Vegas and HKTCD in Hong Kong.

To begin with, the Nanoleaf Aurora is assembled from individual triangular panels, in a completely random order. In the starter kit there are 9 such panels. The triangles are isosceles, the lengths of their sides are 25.5 cm and 24 cm. Thus, you can create a circle from triangles or, on the contrary, unfold a Nanoleaf Aurora over the entire wall. You can buy additional modules if there is such a desire - in this case, you can cover the entire wall or ceiling with luminous triangles and squares. By the way, in 2018, at CES, the company introduced square panels, which, according to the creators of the project, will be sensory.

Each of the panels displays more than 16 million colors and shades. And the light can be made not permanent, but to change it, to create a special schedule for dynamism. In the evening it is a soft yellow light, in the morning it is cold white. All this can be used as a smart light alarm - setting options are many.

The system is controlled in two ways. The first is using a mobile device, the second is through a specialized controller that is connected to the panels. Applications are free, and iOS software is certified for Apple Homekit, that is, you can control everything with the help of Siri voice assistant and the Home application. The iOS app is called Nanoleaf Smarter Series.

In order to install separate panels, it is not necessary to cover the walls with holes - the system is installed using a special double-sided tape. With it, Nanoleaf Aurora can be assembled from 30 different components. According to the experience of use, we recommend stocking up with double-sided tape - the tape from the kit may not be enough to attach to some surfaces (in our case it was a concrete wall).

Power to the panels is supplied from the network, however, only the first (administrative) panel is recorded, the other triangles are powered from each other thanks to special connectors (included). The color of any of the individual panels is adjusted in the manner described above. Control signals are transmitted via Wi-Fi.

Now the developers have added the ability to activate light music mode, when the panels synchronously change the lighting and color depending on the music that is playing on the user's phone and even indoors. Nanoleaf begins to “listen” to the music after installing the Rhythm module (purchased separately) - in this case, by turning on your favorite song, you can enjoy both sound and dynamic lighting. The module can be connected absolutely to any panel.

In general, in its current form, Nanoleaf is an interesting system that can both diversify leisure and create a working atmosphere in the office.

You can purchase the system and additional modules from us, in the Madrobots online store .
